Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard’s Weekly Report — January 20, 2020
Mount Vernon’s Day of Service — Keeping The spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Alive
“The time is always right to do what is right,” said Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This past Saturday, various organizations under the leadership of Brother Arthur Muhammad and the Mount Vernon My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, gathered together to clean one of Mount Vernon’s oldest city buildings: The Armory. This day of service was held in honor of MLK’s legacy and will serve as a reminder that we must all become the change that we want to see.
Bridging Connections with NYS Leadership
We attended The State of the State for Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul at Concordia College. Following the event Council President Lisa Copeland and I met with the Lieutenant Governor and discussed ways we can collaborate on different initiatives from economic development and saving Mt. Vernon Hospital to providing job training programs and other services for returning citizens. We look forward to working with our state partners on pushing the Mount Vernon agenda.
Mount Vernon Awarded $618,000 to Improve Quality of Life
The City of Mount Vernon received $618,000 Grant Award from Attorney General James To Develop Strategic Housing Programs. The fight for equity and social justice continues. Thank you, AG James, for helping Mt. Vernon increase our capacity to provide quality housing to our most vulnerable residents through improved code enforcement, establishment of Tenants Rights and housing advocacy.
Our First Commissioners Meeting
“A successful leader is one that listens”. Last week we held my first Department Head meeting and discussed ways we can make the meeting more effective. I listened to the many opinions from around the table and I’m confident that as we continue to organize and grow as a team, we will deliver the effective service that the Citizens of Mount Vernon deserve.
