Moving Forward on Memorial Field

Yesterday, I attended the groundbreaking for the long-awaited cleanup of Memorial Field. This is a promising step forward and something for which I strongly advocated throughout the primary. I continue to press our elected officials to do the right thing and return Memorial Field back into the hands of our citizens. The political dysfunction of the last four years robbed our community of its crown jewel. Now, it’s time to get it done.

Our County Legislator, Lyndon Williams and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow have both been integral to the fight to restore Memorial Field. Assemblyman Pretlow actually secured $5,000,000 dollars on top of the allocated budget for the project. When I worked for the City of Mount Vernon, I, along with other staff, was also able to secure an additional $500,000 dollars for the field. I am thankful for Legislator Williams, and his work with County Executive Latimer as they have provided the people of Mount Vernon with support and inspiration. The county legacy funding and additional resources will be used to create a 4,000-seat stadium that includes a skate park, state-of-the-art field, new scoreboard, an eight-lane track and additional amenities.

Since the primary I’ve been talking with County Executive George Latimer, the Board of Legislators and other officials about securing even more funding for the field. As I run for Mayor, it brings me joy and satisfaction to build on these critical relationships. I want to thank the city council for its due diligence and the acting Mayor for beginning the process. My vision for Memorial Field is for it be even more beautiful and integral than before, so that our children finally have a place for graduation ceremonies, our seniors can walk freely, our families can share moments, our Razorbacks have a home field and all of us can come together once again.
