The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau (MVYB) in partnership with Management Services visited GOOGLE in New York City

The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau wasted no time kicking off the New Year with a fun and STEAM centered trip to the New York City Google LLC facility. The trip was made possible with the assistance of Gary Grossi, Commissioner of Management Services, who initially made the introduction to Debbie Burrell-Butler, Executive Director of the Youth Bureau. The trip took place on Friday, January 3, 2020, with 24 youth and 6 chaperones boarding the bus at 8:30 am.

Google LLC is an American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products, which include online advertising technologies, search engines, cloud computing, software, and hardware. It is considered one of the Big Four technology companies alongside Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. Our tour guides, John Harvey, Leandro Quezada, and Deverton Henry shared their prior career journey, what it’s like to work at Google, summer and internship opportunities, how to position yourself for the demanding workforce, and extended their help and guidance to youth that are interested in working at Google. The group was fed with healthy food, beverages, and snacks.

Upon returning to City Hall at approximately 3:30 pm, we had a total of 5 youth eager and willing to start their employment process for a chance to work at Google. Staff are working closely with those 5 youth to make sure their Linkedin, resume, cover letter, and job readiness skills are adequate and sufficient. This trip is the first of many to come and the beginning of a budding relationship with Google.

They left a long-lasting impression on our youth, which also amplifies their interest in knowing that a career can be fun, exciting, and rewarding all at the same time- stated by the Executive Director, Debbie Burrell-Butler.
