The State of our Nation

Independence Day presents the perfect opportunity to discuss individual actions as they relate to the community or nation’s best interests.

Just as the nation’s founders debated, today we continue conversations with the debate centering around the public good with disagreement in what steps are the right ones to achieve that end.

There is no doubt the United States of America is better off for having declared its Independence from British Rule and establishing a democracy emulated by countries all over the world that we all participate in today. And that is what today is about.

Still, in these challenging social political times it may be difficult to separate America’s troubled and contradictory past from the latest news events.

This year Independence Day will no doubt have different meanings: some will reflect on the past, some will examine the documents, some will read literature, some will celebrate and spend time with family, but we will all benefit from the freedoms that were gained upon the Declaration of Independence 244 years ago.

I urge you to be safe, continue social distancing, wear a mask, and participate in our democracy because despite the differences that we may have we are moving forward together in favor of the greater good.
